There are some things that change with age that no one ever warns you about. Like food getting stuck in in that same place your teeth or you unconsciously stop wearing big earrings. Or all sudden you can’t stand shopping in the Gap. Can’t even go in the store. A change that I’m currently going through is make up. What used to look good on me, just doesn’t look the same. And it takes more makeup to even have the same effect. It’s so confusing.
It used to be that a swipe of mascara, a swash of blush, and a dab of lip gloss and that was all I need to look shiny and fresh. Now, it takes a lot more to achieve a lot less. Like the petals on this flower are starting to lose their color. How long do I have until the petals start falling? No one prepares you for that.
I’ve loved makeup ever since I was a little girl. I loved how playing with it turned my face into a work of art. While I wasn’t the girl who wore too much makeup for my age, I did feel naked leaving the house without it and took great pride in my fishing tackle box that I covered with stickers that I used as a makeup box.
Today, I look at celebrities like Kim Kardashian and realize in retrospect, that I was never as consumed with it as she is. Maybe I could leave the house without my perfect face, it just felt like I couldn’t.
I can’t imagine how much of her life is spent in a makeup chair. And now her youngest sisters are following in her footsteps at a much early age. It’s way too early in their lives to be hyper-obsessed with their makeup mastery over their faces. Sadly, young girls around the world are too. I can’t imagine what kind of meltdown they’ll face when their my age.
This whole changing makeup issue has me in a quandary. I love makeup and the powerful effects it can have on your looks but I’m having to wear more and more to look like I’m wearing less. Equally confusing is I’m being drawn to wear less makeup out of a commitment to a healthier more sustainable way of living. See? Quandary.
While this doesn’t keep me up at night, I did feel the need to make a video about it. Perhaps you can help me choose which look is better. More makeup or less? Which looks better when you’re over 40? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
And while you’re at it, let me know if you’re going through the same quandary and how you’re solving with it.
